Application procedure

We participate in the match for five positions each year. The next opportunity for you to apply for a PGY2 position will be for the academic year 2011; we will conduct interviews during the fall 2009. Check back here for updated information. Submit to ERAS all your application documents; we do not accept any documents outside ERAS.

Required documents

  1. Medical school transcript

  2. Dean's letter

  3. USMLE (or COMLEX) Parts 1, 2A and 2B (the interview selection process will consider your passing grade on part 2A and status of scheduling for 2B).  USMLE Part I is required for all applicants (MD's and DO's).

  4. Curriculum Vitae

  5. Three to four letters of recommendation --- include one letter from a PM&R supervisor or advisor

  6. Personal statement that describes your motivation to pursue, your experience with PM&R and your experience with research, if any

In October, we will review applications and select from the candidates with the most complete applications. We will interview on selected Fridays during November, December and January. Qualified applicants who participate in the PM&R elective 670A may be able to interview during their elective time.

If you are an international medical graduate, contact the ECFMG. UCI residency programs accept applications from IMGs who have their letter from the California Medical Board, which should be included in the letters of recommendation as Letter # 4, and a J-1 visa. UCI does not sponsor visas.

Before starting a residency at UCI, you must pass Step 1 of the USMLE or COMLEX and both parts of Step 2.  It is also preferable that you pass Step 3 or at least have a scheduled date. While we do not have a required score for interviews, we consider test scores as part of the overall assessment for selection of candidates for interviews. Competitive candidates to this program have a record absent of past fails with scores well over the passing requirements.

After you apply, refer to ERAS for the status of your application.
