Medical Student Elective Rotation

UC Irvine School of Medicine medical students and visiting medical students are invited to schedule an elective rotation with the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation for a period of two or four weeks.

During this rotation, the medical students participate in daily rounds with a junior resident and attending physician and manage one or two patients in the Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) at UC Irvine Medical Center.

The ARU is a 14-bed acute rehabilitation unit for patient recovering from stroke, amputation, brain and spinal injuries.  In addition, the medical student observes inpatient rehabilitation service consultations with a senior resident and attending.

Medical students who elect to do a four-week rotation have an opportunity to rotate to the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, where they will rotate on the inpatient rehabilitation unit for one week.

They also rotate to VA Long Beach Healthcare System's musculoskeletal outpatient clinic. This elective rotation allows medical students to view the daily operations of the inpatient rehabilitation service and also to be a part of a very busy outpatient clinic.

For more information about our medical student elective rotation, please contact Susan Downing at sdowning@uci.edu or 714-456-6444.
